well it depends f the couple , but for me i would say with out angagement i married my husband just 3 months after i meet him we didnot get engaged and we got marry , now we are 7 years married and we have 2 kids one is 5 years old and the other baby is 18 months old , we are still having a nice relationship he loves me and i love him a lot , some people get engaged for long and then when they get married they dont last long. so Good Luck.

Maybe not engaged for years but yeah getting engaged serves a purpose. It's getting you guys ready to make this very serious step. There should be a lot of talking about finances, children, how to raise the children, housework, where to go for holidays, etc. Marriage is wonderful, but it takes a lot of effort to keep it wonderful so the more prepared you are the better. Spend less time planning the wedding and more time planning the marriage....it's much more important.

How about being engaged for a few months or 1 year? Any nice weddings require some planning time.

engagement is there for a reason... it is one point in your life with your partner where you can stop "putting your best foot forward". this is the time where you will be you, and he will be him. you will learn his ways, and make a good assessment on your relationship and compatibility. and in the end, you are assured of making a better judgement for a better decision on whether to marry him or not.
