I agree that it is dirty and the smell is caused from bacteria/ old food.

Baking soda or something similar will mask the smell, but not eliminate it.

Removing everything and cleaning it thoroughly will take care of the problem. Don't forget to clean around the door gasket, as well as in the back of or under any shelves.

Remember: It didn't smell like that when it was new, did it?

I've noticed that my freezer, not my frigde, stinks when something in the fridge has gone bad. Clean out everything older than two weeks out of the entire unit. Put a small bowl of baking soda somewhere in it, preferably one in the fridge and one in the freezer, and squirt enough lemon juice in there to cover just the top of the soda. It will start to fizzle, and the gas deodorizes. It works for microwaves, too. Let it sit in there for a little, like a day, then switch it with regular arm and hammer.

Put a box of baking soda in there every other month. I set mine next to the ice cubes, it cuts down on the odor quite a bit. Do the same in the fridge. Sometimes I set a small bowl of vinegar in the freezer too overnight.

To keep your freezer smelling - well, not at all - defrost it regularly, and wipe it out with a cloth dipped in a bowl of water with some bicarbonate of soda in it. In a fridge, a cupful of cat litter looks after the smells there, so it might just help in a freezer too.

Bacteria mostly but sometimes a small leak in coolant will do it also. Just open a box of baking soda and set it in the freezer it will help.

Try an open box of baking soda. It will help keep the air from smelling so stale.
