To get a hold, a pitcher must enter the game in a save situation, record at least one out, and leave the game without having given up the lead. The person above me is incorrect in stating that they can leave with a tie game and get a hold. If the reliever in this situation relinquishes the lead at all, he will be charged with a blown save.

It's not a perfect stat, but it's about as legitimate as the save statistic. Middle relievers don't often get much attention, so this is one way to look at their use, and it's a useful stat category for fantasy leagues.

Edit - Since there seems to be some question as to whether it needs to be a save situation in order to record a hold, here's a link to an ESPN defintion of terms that states that, yes, it does:

Hold -- it's a pretty weak stat that gets credited to any reliever (that enters the game before the closer) that comes in and doesn't give up the lead... I way be wrong, but I believe that it doesn't have to be a "save" situation like one of the previous responses states... Meaning that if a team is up by 1 run or 10 runs and the reliever doesn't give up the lead, they get the hold.

This is a relatively new stat and it stands for hold. A pitcher gets a hold when they come into the came with a lead and don't lose that lead but do not qualify for a save.

If you ask me we are getting way to many stats.

For pitchers, it's "hold". You are awarded one if you pitch in extended relief and either maintain a lead or tie, but don't finish the game.
