I'd look to old school. One of the best is the Vandals, an original Orange County punk band that started in the early 80s (and are still around!) Their lyrics are funny and insightful, and were an inspiration to later bands like the Offspring. Try the albums "When in Rome, Do As the Vandals" and "Peace Through Vandalism." Great tracks are the old school rap dissing "Ladykiller ("illa zilla, illa zilla, illa zilla, LADYKILLA!") "Bad Birthday Bash" (in which a bunch of mohawked punks invade a suburban birthday party and proceed to trash it, punk-style -- "Asked to bring some friends/they walked in with mohawks/as the band began to play/they started to throw rocks/now I thought that this was cool/'til they threw me in the pool/and the sofa must've missed me/'cause now it's in here with me.") Another not to miss song of theirs (and their closest thing to a "hit", in that it was played incessantly on 106.7 KROQ throughout the eighties) is "Urban Struggle," which made fun of the "urban cowboy" movement in the early 80's. Too, too cool. (check out the song links on the Amazon link below). Another cool thing is they actually went over to Iraq to play for the troops. Not that many of them knew who they were (except maybe Southern California hardcore fans), but they were still loved.
For a harder edge, try Suicidal Tendencies. Try to look up their video for "Institutionalized" on YouTube. When I was in high school, the phrase "All I wanted was a Pepsi! Just one Pepsi! And she wouldn't give it to me!" was the height of cool. (Gotta hear the song to understand). See the video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=_EhYcb1eW1o&search=suicidal%20tendencies%20
The band X is another one not to miss. Tracks like "Blue Spark" and "Los Angeles" are top-notch, and don't miss their remake of the Troggs' 60's song "Wild Thing," which was featured in the Charlie Sheen movie "Major League." They make the connection between punk and rockabilly, and do it extremely well. John Doe is an outstanding musician and lyricist, and you can't beat Exene Cervenka for just being weird."Los Angeles" video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=-wmGiDfcTnc&search=X%20Los%20Angeles
There's also the latter-day traditionalists Rancid, complete with tats and old-school mohawks. They really show the punk/ska connection as well, which was an integral part of some regions of punk.
Some kids today think the Ramones, despite being considered the very first punk band, are too slow. I disagree - what they may lack in pure speed they more than make up for in original punk cred. You simply can't hear "Sheena is a Punk Rocker" and not wish you were 16 years old and living in New York City in 1977.
I hope this helps. Give 'em all a try - you might like them.

Rancid, Six ft Hick, the Dissables, Time Again, No means No, Throw Rag, Transplants, GBH, Ramones, Nekromantix, Tiger Army (psychobilly), Leatherface, Exploited, US Bombs, the Saints, the Clash, Supersuckers, Charlie Horse, Sydney City Trash, Lars and the bastards, Nerve Agents, Bad Religion, NOfX, Pennywise..
I could list all day but there are some good uns to start you off. Please stay away from that emo shite.. it will turn you into a ****. Check out Hellcat Record label and website. Its a punk label. They put out good compilations that are REAL punk at a punk price.. CHEAP! Its a good place to start because there albums have heaps of bands and you can see which ones you like then buy their albums. I found a lot of punk bands are on labels that have other punk bands so its always a good idea to check out what else is on your fav bands record label and hey.. dont download the songs you like. Most good punk is still DIY and buying their albums and going to their live shows helps them make more good punk.
good luck and good to see a smart question on here.
