KEGEL EXERCISES
These exercises strengthen the muscles of the vagina. This is helpful after childbirth to firm up the muscles and prevent or treat weakness or relaxation. Relaxation can cause some women to have difficulty with bowel movements. Tightening these muscles during sexual relations can increase pleasure.
To be sure you are doing the exercises correctly:
Try to tighten the muscles to try and pull the opening of your bladder, vagina and bowels up inside. Avoid tightening the muscles of the abdomen or buttocks at the same time.
Put your finger into your vagina as if it were a tampon. Tighten the muscles and feel the vagina tighten about our finger.
Sit on the toilet with your legs spread apart, start to urinate, then tighten the muscles to try and stop the flow of urine.
Have the doctor or nurse show you when you are having a pelvic examination.
The exercise:
Tighten the muscles and hold them as long as you can until you can hold them three to five seconds. Relax and tighten them again. Repeat tightening and relaxing ten times.
Tighten and relax the muscles as above but do them as quickly as possible for ten times. Try to make the opening of your vagina flutter.
Tighten the muscles as if you were trying to such a tampon into the vagina. You should sort of feel a wave of tightness starting at the opening and spreading up inside to your uterus. Hold again for three to five seconds, relax and repeat ten times.
Bear down as if you were trying to have a bowel movement but more with the vagina than the rectum. Hold for three to five seconds, relax and repeat ten times.
At first you may not be able to do these exercises for ten times or hold the muscles tight for three to five second. Do them as long as you can an practice every day for five to ten times a day. Gradually increase them until you can do them as directed. After a month or so there should be a real improvement. You can check this yourself with your finger in your vagina or have it checked the next time you come to the clinic for a pelvic examination. You must do them at least ten times in a row, five to ten times a day for real improvement.
