Left the flue closed while the fire burned for about 15 minutes. Smoke left black soot stains on frame and under mantle. Wood has medium brown stain, so some products (like Magic Eraser) won't work on it.

There is a product called Speedy White and it is made to remove soot (and it works). Are you sure that the wood is not slightly burned or the finish on the wood? 15 minutes is a long time, if the finish is actually burned you may have to strip it and refinish it, if it isn't wiping off, look close, the problem may be deeper than you think. Dish soap will remove the soot also, I have used it to clean glass on my wood stove. Oh, you will probably find soot on may more things in that room, look close. I have worked with and sold gas logs for 20 years.

The logs in my fireplace were rusted from a leak when I bought
my house. It made a horrible mess when it was lighted. I used
mr. clean. After I got it clean I used pledge to polish the mantle. I have tile around the fireplace and I just polished it with window cleaner.

1. Drip water through the ashes and add some lye. Make "Grandma's Special Soap" and sell it at a craft fair. 2. Is Dervish cute? I will give you all the lint from my dryer for him. 3. I will give you 50 drachmas and some of those red and white mints that are individually wrapped that you can pocket when leaving a restaurant. Most of them are antiques themselves. 4. Circus peanuts are nasty. (FYI)
