It has been stated time and again by people in other countries that the American people are self absorbed. Maybe it is time we do just that, become self absorbed. Pull out of all of the world's problems and let them take care of themselves. They like to kick us around when we are involved, then cry when we aren't. We as a people need to stand by our president and not cry foul when our candidate doesn't win. We need to ignore the rhetoric espoused by the liberal media and think for ourselves. Too may people worldwide think because they saw it on TV, or read it in the paper it is the absolute truth. Over the course of the years we have lost many American lives in this war, we lost more in one day when the war was brought to our home. On that day America stood united and as one voice cried out for justice. We demanded that our leaders do something! Now when they are trying to do something about it many whine and snivel and call our president a criminal. He is not! The dog come into our yard, we chased him home. Can you imagine what the American people would have said if the president had stood by and did nothing after 9/11?

The answers above, which at first glance might seem trite or "smart," pretty much hit the nail on the nose.
Public opinion polls show that the public disapproves of the direction the country is going, the congress, and the President. President Bush consistently sets policy initiatives that are unpopular. Social Security. The Iraq War was unpopular before it even began. Remember the protests BEFORE the war began? These are unprecedented in history.
So sure, having a President and a Congress that represented the opinions of a majority of the American people, would be a great start.
It's also worth noting that politics have become increasingly volatile in the last two decades. I blame Lee Atwater. Never before had campaigns been run so negative and attacked the personal character of a candidate so viciously. And now you have a movement in this country which seeks to villify the other side, rather than explain the merits of its own views. "Liberal" has become a dirty word due to the efforts of this movement. Opponents of the Iraq War are regularly portrayed as unpatriotic. And on and on and on.

Well, if the attacks on the World Trade Centers could only do it for a week or two. And the Hurricanes are actually dividing us more. Then I don't know. I think we need a fundamental change in our Political process. No decent person will run for office because of smear campaigns. So were left with the most deceitful, immoral and uncaring scum running our country. All they care about is their bottom line.. What it takes to get in office and how much PAC money they can hide away. So they Politicians, Lawyers and Media are in a vicious cycle of using and abusing the American people and the individual has no real power. Any, read State of Fear by Micheal Crichton, it is interesting perspective on the topic.

The two political parties seemed to have merged into one ugly monster. I think if we had newer political parties we would have more choices. The fact that most third party presidential candidates never were allowed to participate in the debates was a disgrace. We hear the same BS from both parties over and over again and its what we want to hear but once they are elected they seem to all have selected memories. Change the whole election process by putting extreme limits on spending so an average American could run for office fairly. Perhaps then we could get honest men and woman in office who have seen first hand the problems we all face everyday. There are too many bought and sold members in the House and the Senate just stuffing their pockets with our tax dollars and it has to stop.

Americans are too arrogant and self-involved in their personal lives too even consider coming together. We have issues like homophobia, racism, anti-semetism, poverty, unemployment, etc. just to name a few things. These are issues that no one will truly address because everyone is so concerned that someones feelings might be hurt. It is going to take guts on everyones part to ask the hard questions and to look for answers that are balanced for all of americas citizens. There is too much division among the social classes, genders, sexualities, races, nationalities, and religions, etc. Is it really possible to be proud of people that you do not know? Perhaps PRIDE is what is destroying the American people?

Good question...I wish I had the answer. I don't think there is even a remote possibility of the American people coming together as a whole. Every time it seems that we are drawing towards being "United" we start to sling mud and play the blame game again. Over and over.
As for uniting if war comes to OUR land. I don't think THAT would even do it. We'd never agree as to WHO to put in charge or HOW to defend ourselves or IF we were really defending ourselves or if we were really in "cahoots" with the enemy. It would just go on and on and on. I love America....but it is destroying itself. It can't be blamed on just the liberals or the conservatives....we are ALL doing it. That's ONE thing America is "United" on........destroying our Country's Pride!

that is a rather very long-term complicated process. it takes a large group of ppl acting together for this to take opklace.
and i dont think it will be any soon.
that is because of all the illegal actions the US is taking that is letting everybody else hate america and the americans.
for example, the recent incidents and wat is happening in Lebanon..it just breaks my heart to c wat is happening..
the lebanese children, women and men are dying b/c of a foolish act of 2 countries...
and yet the whole world is watching and no one is doing anything.
just every once in a while, those political ppl fly to each other lands , hold conferences that they should end the violence but then...nothing happens..
we r saying words words ...and in the mean time violent actions and killing and murdering is taking place in lebanon.

Basically, people need to become involved again and quite putting down this great country. We need clean elections, where the candidates don't have to have great wealth to get elected. Everyone needs to contribute to election money, or set aside tax money for this. Everyone needs to be informed about who is running for office, and become involved in their election. Good people need to step up and run for office, locally or federally. This country needs honest, hard-working, articulate thinking citizens to get involved.
It seems easier to ridicule, or make fun of this country, but honestly, our grandparents and their grandparents put their lives on the line for your freedom. We owe it to our grandchildren to do the same for them, and build a good life for them.

Historical model indicates some type of national catastrophe or threat great enough to dismiss thoughts of personal or group differences (i.e., survival as a whole disintegrates individual opinions).
