I bought a Ice Maker kit that contains self piercing valve as well as compression fittings. I heard from some people that compression fittings are not recomended why is this..... This seems to be the most popular method of connecting appliances (comrpessions fittings))

My feeling in pressurized water connections is - short cuts do not last too long and are not 100% trustworthy.
Just run the small copper tube and plumb it in with normal solder joints - and you can sleep at nights....

Also you may need to have enough water flow - that you get with tubing. Which you would not get with the small narrow hole in a piercing type connection.
Something to consider if you have both the ice and water dispenser - they need more volume....

What you have is a "saddle clamp" that goes on the pipe, either pvc, or copper, and when you wind the T handle in, it "pierces" the pipe and lets the water flow into the hose.

Now, you DO NEED the compression fittings, regardless of what your well meaning friends say...(I have put a lot of these on).

Make SURE, if your going from plastic to plastic to get a brass "tube insert" that goes on the plastic so that your compression fitting will have some thing to "bite" into, and not destroy the plastic and shoot the line.

I wish you well..

RTTNBLLY is right, If they tell you not reccommended does not mean you can not use them. Just means they may be points for a leak to happen later on in time.
I have this valve on mine now for years and it is till ok. No problems at all, as with the compression fitting also. Just make sure they are good and tight when you install them. Also with the valve I used a lock- tite gasket sealer on all parts when I installed them just to make sure.

Over time they loosen and leak, BUT! so will the self piercing valve. Just remember to check for leaks twice a year

Do it right the first time (solder) and never have to be concerned with it again. A quick hook up now will cost time, money and aggravation later.

it will work, but it is not recommended because it will leak eventually and you won't ever be able to remove it
