Wild caught kings might be very difficult to feed, and you could end up killing him if he refuses to eat. If he does refuse, there are a few tricks to get them to eat including "braining" a mouse pinky (cutting the head open to expose the brains) or scenting a mouse pinky with the local food such as a lizard. If he refuses long enough, you may have to force feed which could get him to start eating or stress him out so much that he gets other health problems.
If you want to try, I would suggest keeping him no longer than a couple of weeks if he refuses to eat.

No it's not against the law. Most King snakes are very docile and take to handling pretty easily. If you decide to keep it, make sure you have the time to care for it properly because once you take it in, the snake is totally dependent upon you for everything, which you should know if you have other snakes. Also, if it doesn't eat well you , you can always release it again to the wild. You don't have to keep a non-feeding , native species until it starves to death. You just simply release it.

You are so lucky!! CA kings are by far my favorite, it is like a gift from the snake god. Keep him! No, it is not illegal, they are not protected. He is docile because king snakes are generally docile. He will live much longer and eat a lot better in captivity- you will be doing him a favor. Wish I was your neighbor, I'd ask to take him.

My guess is that you live near a wilderness area? My mom had a house in the hills and had a resident king snake in the yard. It was the best of all worlds, it he was always around, lived naturally and she could see him daily (and ate natural food). If you do, find an area where he would find 'comfortable' to stay.

No its not illegal. We had one for the longest time. Tell your brother that since you have all the snakes, its kinda like having a collection. So cycologically, the snake is yours.

Where are you located?
Are you sure it is a Cal. king?
If you are located in the native area of the Cal. king & you are sure it is a Cal. King, i would suggest you take it outside & release it.
If you want a pet snake buy a captive bred one from a local breeder.
