A few reasons:
1) they do not play everyday, so they are not counted on for their bats
2) Their main concentration goes into pitching, so they do not get the time for batting practice that everyday players get
3) To protect the investment of their `arms' they are kept away from potentially hazardous duties such as batting, batting practice, etc.

Because they don't practice batting! It's not their priority. They are pitchers so they concentrate on becoming better pitchers. But some are still good hitters. There are some who are batting over .200 and Zambrano even has 4HRs. I believe Sosa has 3 HRs for Atlanta also.
Some of these pitchers were position players in college and hit well but since they don't practice batting, they usually suck at it.

Not all pitchers are bad. In the high school levels and college levels pitchers are descent batters. When you get to a world class level pitchers must bat against other world class pitchers which makes this oppurtunity more difficult.

Part of it is the lack of at bats in real game situations-- you can practice all you want, but if you only hit once every five days, you aren't going to be in any kind of game shape. The other part of it is that colleges and minor leagues use the DH, so pitchers generally don't get to hit at all at those levels.

I think it is because that they never had to bat until they made it to the major leagues... In Little League, high school, and college pitchers never bat... so when they get to the major leagues they are out of practice.

I recently saw a statistic about Carlos Zambrano after his home run yesterday. I think he has 46 ABs with 4 home runs which ammounts to a homer in every 11.5 at-bats this season, which is fourth in the league (ahead of Adam Dunn of Cincinnati).

i dont know - i guess cause they dont try or train for it i dont know - u know Babe Ruth was a great pitcher before he became a batter - so i think the at bats does have something to do with it

T^his is because they want to conserve there energy for pitching, not waste it on batting. Plus, they want to be able to move quickly because if they get hit and they have to go back out to pitch, they dont want to go pitch another inning injured. And pitchers focus on their pitching control and accuracy than hitting. Plus, when you look at a pitchers stats, you see his ERA, strikes, balls, and K's, not RBIs, HRs, and adverage.
