You are rated in tennis on a number scale 1.0 1.5 2.0 ....all the way to 7.0. Anything above a 5.0 tournament is considered an Open. Also, anyone can qualify to play in an Open tournament, even Amatures.

Tennis involves a large field of players unlike basketball, soccer, or baseball. Golf also has opens like tennis because of the comprehensive number of players who have a chance to win.

Not all end with the word open.
It just means that any one can play it.
Like the U.S. Open. A Kid from highschool can play it, but they have to get thru a qualifying round before playing what you see on T.V.

I think it refers to the fact that the player is not representing any country. And you can have multiple players from the same country.
