I am living in Omaha, NE and I want to buy property with its own water, a well source, preferably. How would I go about finding a place like that? I dont want to go too far out of town.

Would building a house be easier?

You're going to have to most likely buy a house out in the country. In certain areas, the city requires you to use city water even if you do have a well. I do believe that well water can be healthier than city water and it definitely tastes better. Make sure never to spray any pesticides near the well or you could contaminate your well. Always drink, smell, and test the water if you are going to buy a house that has a well and find out how many gallons per minute that the well will produce. If it doesnt' produce very much you may run out of water while filling up a kiddy pool or watering your lawn etc. Also, you may want to look at having a back-up generator installed. If you're power goes out, unless you have a back-up generator, you wont' have water. You need electricity to run the pump that pumps the water out of the well. If you can't afford to put in a back up generator system then I recommend you have buckets or pails around to use for washing hands and bathing when the power goes out. If your house has a well, you also want to make sure that the toilets flush properly. Most houses that have wells also have septic systems and sometimes during the spring or when the ground is wet the toilets will not flush properly if the septic system was not designed right or if the water table is too high.

Also be careful of what you put around your well as far as chemicals etc. Nitrogen or fertilzer run off it it seeps down into the well can cause blue baby syndrome.

We had a doctor get special permission to exept zoning restrictions so he could have his own windmill. Zoning restrictions are one problem. There are houses that had a well before they were zoned and that's one possibility.

You're going to find that a well is a lot of work, especially pulling out of the Ogalla Lake, but that old glacier water sure tasted good!!
