The concept of spinster-ship is not used anymore. You can remain unmarried forever and you are not called a spinster anymore. It used to be a stigma.

Spinsters used to be older (40+) but society seems to be avoiding the term altogether

I think since people used to get married just to have kids, then when one gets to old to have any. I think. I dunno. Since people today marry for love and not money or kids, it doesn't really matter.
