50 states

The short and correct answer is 50

However, there are some people who argue that this is wrong for the following reasons:

- Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia all designate themselves as 'commonwealths', not states. This has no real impact, it is more a traditional distinction.

- American Samoa, Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands, US Virgin Islands, and Guam are Protectorates, or Insualar Areas. This means that people from those may be considered citizens of the USA and/or may have other rights reserved for US citizens. Some people argue that these should be considered or be given status as 'states'.

- The District of Columbia is a 'federal district', which also occationally is considered for statehood.

Fifty nifty stars in the flag that billows so beautif'ly in the breeze.
