I agree with you I wouldn't have for several reasons. 1) That was the worst thing I have ever seen on a soccer field in my life, whether it had happened to an Italian player or not I would have refused his shirt number as a sign of my disgust with his act. You can do 99 good things and you'll be remember for the 1 bad thing you did for the rest of your life. Zidane is a great player, he played for some of the best teams in the world, Juventus, Real, and France national, but I think this act has tarnished him forever. 2) Normally different positions have a set of numbers they use, this was also used to identify what position a player was playing, like 5 is usually a defender, it looks like these days the numbers are all over the place. Cannavaro may want to pick a different number for the time being.

To all the people who have answered previously stating that it should be an honor for Cannavaro to wear Zidane's jersey I say....are you on drugs???!!!! I'm not trying to take away from Zidane's accomplishments, but what great acts have made him a legend? I think of Pele as a legend. Who's to say Cannavaro isn't a legend equal to Zidane?

Hi Gemmy,
I think that the decision is up to Fabio himself. I am sure if he was insulted or offended by that he would have said something to the management of Real. We don't know what Cannavaro actually thinks of Zidane as a man or footballer, perhaps he is mature enough to see it as a compliment that Real think he is warranted that number. If the incident with Z and M had not happened, we more than likely would not have to even consider this issue, because aside from that incident, one cannot deny Zidanes ability nor what he gave to football or the fans. He is up there with Pele and the like and maybe Cannavaro thinks differently. He may see it as an honour. We don't know really, we are not in his mind. I wish him well with Real though I am sure he will be missed terribly by his Italian fans and supporters in their league. He is a good guy and his fans will follow his career, even if it is with Real.

Wow! It's almost poetic! Zidane, the captain of France, leaves football and his number is given to Cannavaro, Italy's captain, who just won the World Cup by beating France. He now will follow Zidane's steps, just like the movies! Only Real would invent sth like this. Anyway I wouldn't have accepted it. Why to take that number, there isn't any number left anymore in Real Madrid?! Are they that overcrowded?!

why not? isn't it the number Cannavaro has wearing all along? What has it got to do with Zidane.... other than the fact that it's a Real Madrid shirt

Cannavaro is in many ways more superior than Zidane.... so stop degrading him, by comparing to that beast

it's like comparing devil with angel.. tsktsk

Of Course!
What an honour, now he must live up to it.
We all make mistakes in life and if this was Zidanes it was not enough to overshadow a brilliant career.
Just remember him for running the game against the so-called superstars of Brazil at Germany 2006!

Cannavaro was outstanding in this World Cup too but,

All Hail the Great Zizou!

He was given the number that has nothing to do with the shirt...I would except the number after all he was a famous soccer player...even if I don't agree with what he did...Cannavaro knows what he's doing and he'll be a great asset to Real Madrid!!

Cannvaro accepting Zidanes shirt number only means that he admires Zidane and looks up to him, and inside him he knows that perhaps he also would have reacted in the same way to metarazzi, this is a fact many Italians would deny ....but its a fact that zidan is a footballing idol to a lot of young Italian footballers, specially during his time in Juventus

I think that he should accept the shirt number with pride, no matter the conflict between Materazzi and Zizzou… Zidane is a legend and when a team gives you a shirt number of a legendary player that means that you are really appreciated by the club and the team!
So my answer is of course he should take it!!!
