I expect the question is not as trivial as counting only the 1x1 subsquares of the chessboard.

There are
1^2 8x8 squares
2^2 7x7 squares
3^2 6x6 squares
...
8^2 1x1 squares

Therefore there is a total of 204 squares on a chessboard.

Chess, game of skill between two people that is played using specially designed pieces on a square board comprised of 64 alternating light and dark squares in eight rows of eight squares each. The vertical columns on the board that extend from one player to the other are called files, and the horizontal rows are called ranks. The diagonal lines across the board are called diagonals.

Chess boards are 8 by 8 equalling 64. If you use your imagination to make squares out of the squares, with no overlapping, it goes up to 84, count the board itself, and you get 85.

you have sixty four 1x1 squares and then you have 2x2s, 3x3s & so on to the biggest one which is one huge 8x8 square. Now you do the maths. Add them up. jimbo has the right concept but the numbers are higher. for example fot 7x7s there are 4 squares & not 2.

64 squares. 8 horizontally, 8 vertically, therefore 8x8 or 8 with the power of two = 64.
