“Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”
Hermann Göring 1946 Nuremberg Trials(Nazi)

The answer is yes, and your quote explains how. U.S. government / military is also guilty of not explaining to the public the events that led up to a "terrorist attack," and quickly labeling the event as an "act against freedom" and all the positive things that "no one in their right mind would be against." When Osama bin Laden burst on the public scene in 2001, the government and military didn't bother to explain the history that led to his group's actions -- the previous war in Afghanistan and training of bin Laden, how placing troops in Saudi Arabia during the first Gulf War angered him, etc. The September 11 attacks obviously weren't "an attack against freedom" as it's commonly been labeled, and it certainly has been used for economic gain, especially in the unrelated (but supposedly related... until more recently) war in Iraq.

The documentary "Why We Fight" (link provided below) does a good job discussing this topic.

If the true leaders of a nation are the ones who profit from war then terrorizing the population is a 'good'/ traditional method for keeping the cash coming in.
In the west we live in capitalist states when exactly this happens.
An external villain is needed to take the fall however.
The kindest thing I can say about it is that they are trying to look after our quality of life. The price is paid by foreigners.

War has always existed. I think there will never be worldwide peace. How could it even be possible. So many countries with different opinions, religion, and issues. Think of all the jobs that would be lost if there was never any war, all the military would have to lose if no needs existed. I think ALLOWING and PROVOKING would possible be true. I think we really have no need for STAGING it at this point.

God yes, the Bush administration was dancing when the Twin Towers got hit, Bush's popularity was in the toilet and they needed something to happen to rally the country around him. Fear is an amazing incentive. Get the people scared and you can get away with anything.

Of course, wouldn't you have liked to cash out the insurance policy on the twin towers? Or if you are invested in oil, wouldn't you cheer every time "something" happens "somewhere" to cause the price of a barrel to go up?

What you suggest is certainly possible, but it is risky for the leaders. If they are caught in the act, the people will lose all faith and call for their heads on a silver platter. Nobody likes to be lied to.

This is the basis of all politics.
"The rich are stealing your money, vote for me and I'll protect you"
"The big companies are oppressing you, vote for me and I'll protect you"
"The young are trying to kill off the old, vote for me and I'll protect you"
"Terrorists killed almost 3000 Americans on 9/11, vote for me and I'll protect you"

Are you calling all politicians Nazis? Or only the ones that you don't support, even though your guys do the exact same crap?

As the majority of people become educated as to the real reasons and perpetrators of 9/11, the harder it is becoming for the NEOCONS to fool the people. I bet they thought they got away with it because of the acquiescence of the American people, due to shock, disbelief and misinformation.
