i mean today's mainstrem pop music, R&B, Hip hop, rap are merely just show biz. show biz in a sense just to entertain people with flashy clothes(MTV), cool funky remixes, audio editing, etc. what happened to the meaning of art with these kind of music, lip synching and stuff like that, just listen to pink flyod, now thats an expression of art, enigma, mike oldfield, yanni, steve vai, Nygwie Mumstein, dream theatre, vangelis, michael hedges, ben harper etc these are called music, they put their heart and soul into it, when i listen to them i hear music. their contribution to music/art are tremendous with the sole desire just to promote good music and art. when i listen to 50cents or ludicris or eminem or missy elliot all i hear is just some one talking at the back(rapping) and some bass thumping and a bit of yo here and a bit of yo there and some elephant at the back, this is ridiculous, it just desecrate the meaning of music as an art

Here's a little perspective. Every generation says the same thing when a newer musical style comes along and replaces the stuff they grew up listening to.

The people that grew up in the 40s were horrified when Elvis came along. They literally thought that rock was going to destroy western civilization as we know it. And the Elvis fans thought the Beatles were little more than poor imitations that needed hair cuts (I was there for that one). Beatles fans thought that Credence Clearwater Revival was a step backward because they used very simple chord progressions. (I was on to the Grateful Dead and Moby Grape at this point).

If you want social commentary, listen to the folk music from the late 50s and early 60s. If you want musical innovation, listen to Charlie Parker, then Ornette Coleman, then the Beatles. The Beatles wrote a lot of nice little songs that were incredibly complex musically. That's one of the main reasons their music was so good.

I like quite a bit of the stuff Led Zeppelin did but they started the heavy metal genera and that lead to a lot of bands that thought playing loud meant playing well and screaming three notes constituted singing.

The current music is just as much a reflection of the people making and listening to it as any of the early styles. If you want to hear stuff that was only made for the money, listen to the Hair Bands or disco. Fortunately, I was on to jazz by then - John Coltrane, not that horrid Kenny G.

By the way, several of the musicians you named - yanni, Michael Hedges, Vangelis for example - have no heart or soul to put into their "music". It should only be played in elevators and the produce sections of grocery stores. I'm 54 and not a fan of hip hop but would rather listen to that all day than to hear one tune by those folks.

If you want to hear something with real soul, look up an acapella group called The Persuasions.

I couldn't agree with you more. The same people that like this kind of music and keep up with it are the same people asking how to download free music on the net. No one cares anymore, at least not about art anyway. The only art people have any need for is shock art, and there's no sense of renaissance in that. There are still a few bands out there though who are keeping it real so to speak in terms of pushing the creative envelope so don't lose all hope in humanity just yet. I can assure you though that a rebound is on the way as music and art go through cycles and stages. Just have faith and support your bands and spread the word for the artists you feel are deserving. Cheers!

I agree. Music is not made to express yourself anymore. Mainstream, I'm talking about. It can't be called music anymore. Maybe the lyrics mean a bit, maybe growing up in your childhood, etc. But what really chaps my a-s up is there's a lot of people in the world who have so much passion for music and they practise their instruments every single day for hours. I don't see them being famous.

Compare this "music" (IF you can compare) to Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society).

Uncomparable. Who's with me?

mostly, some people have a good talent, and whatever your favorite type of music is, you most consider it an art, the types you hate, aren't art. so it is really a matter of opinion.
