Are X-ray technitians at risk of developing an increased risk of cancer bc of their exposure to radiation? When an xray beam is shot on a leg of a patient, does the radiation spread out from that specific area? Thanks.

There are cases where radiologic technologists are in room where the x-rays are being generated. We take images by fluoroscopy (which is real time x-ray to visualize movement). We also take images in ICU/CCU and ER and surgery with portable x-ray units. When we are in those situations, we wear leaded aprons. Rad Techs are very aware of the dangers of over-exposure of radiation and we use the lowest dose of radiation to get the best quality image. The far majority of us are committed to not only protecting our patients but ourselves. The cancer rates are increased in Rad Techs, but the increase is so minor. When a tech gets lazy about using radiation protection, the badge they wear will record that increased dose, and by law, the tech is not allowed to work, and that means no pay check. So, not many techs I know are lazy about this! They have to make a living too!

Radiological technicians are at an increased risk if they do not practice good technical skills when they image their patients. Appropriate shielding, coupled with the focused energy of the X-Ray beam, mean that if the X-Ray tech is focused on the required safety tools and procedures, their risk is minimized.

Xrays go in multiple directions. The tech is protected by a lead shield or room and thereby reduces or eliminating the risk of irradiation.

X-ray techs go behind the protective barrier before they take the x-ray, they are protected from the radiation.

Usually the techs don't stay in the room so that they're not exposed to (as much) radiation.

yes, that is why most are behind a lead wall. But some get relaxed in their safety and become overly exposed.
