If you want to stay in Ohio & have a romantic getaway, I would suggest Hocking Hills. My husband & I rented a cabin for around $65.00 a night & it was great. Had a huge whirlpool bath & a fire pit in the back surrounded by trees. Nice & quiet & even to go hiking it's really quiet and relaxing.
Canada is a good idea also (but rumor has it that starting in October you would need a passport)....like Niagera Falls.

This might sound crazy, but have you ever considered checking out the West Side of Cleveland? I'm from the West Side, but go over to the East Side every now and then. I get the impression that a lot of East Siders think there is nothing to do on the West Side of Cleveland.
The West Side is actually very nice, and especially along the lake. From downtown Cleveland all the way to Avon Lake along Lake Avenue is impressive 20 miles route of beautiful homes, lakefront parks, and beaches. Along the Lake or in the Rocky River Metroparks makes for great cycling. Other than the lakeshore and parks, downtown Rocky RIver has a lot of character and a lot of unique upscale restaurants and boutiques. Of course there is Crocker Park in Westlake, which you could probably spend a whole day at shopping and dining. Crocker Park does have a number of retailers unavailable on the East Side, and a little better experience in my opinion than Legacy Village.
The only issue is where to stay on the West Side. If you wanted to stick to the Lake, try the Edgewater Estates Bed and Breakfast in the stately Edgewater neighborhood or Sunset Shores Bed and Breakfast in Avon Lake for a little more rural scenery. Or if you wanted to be closer to I-90 and Crocker Park, there are a lot of hotels in Westlake right off I-90.

Put-In-Bay is always a great getaway. It is very peaceful with a fun downtown area and many things to see and do. If you are looking to stay overnight, I would suggest a Bed & Breakfast if dates are open. You can also go to Cedar Point which is on the way. Maybe spend a day at each place. This all may be a little pricy, but still cheaper than flying somewhere.

You could try Amish Country. My parents stayed at an Inn down in Amish Coutry. It is away from it all and there are things you could do (like hike, shop, whatever). You can find pleanty of info by typing in amish country in ohio into yahoo.
Another option would be to go white water rafting down in West Virgina. My church group went there and it was a blast. We went with the Rivermen company. I believe that their season is from early spring though October.
Another good option would be to visit Toledo. The art museum there is excellent and they have a harbor so there is pleanty to do. The city is beautiful with loads of trees and a lot of public art.
You could also visit the islands near Sandusky. There are a few islands that you can get to by boat including Kelly's island and Put-in-bay. Also Marblehead beach near Sandusky is a great beach and there is a lighthouse. Also Sandusky has a speedway near it, so there is car racing (I think). Plus there is Cedar Point (they have special hours in Oct), and 2 indoor water parks.
I am sure that you will have a good trip.

What about Mackinac Island MI? It's a sweet little town, old fashioned. You'd be right after the season ends, so could probably get a good deal on a bed and breakfast.
If you like cities better, Chicago or Toronto would be my picks.
