When a person has sound knowledge, coupled with a capacity for thought and reason especially to a high degree, they are rated as 'intelligent'.
When a person is mentally quick and resourceful, displays inventiveness and skill, and is competent in adapting means to ends, they are labelled as 'clever' !

Intelligence is a reflection of a person's accumulation of knowledge. Most people are born with an obvious degree of intelligence, which is evident in the fact that babies can understand and learn language. This kind of intelligence is hard-wired in to the human brain.
What makes someone intelligent is their ability to understand. Without understanding how could you learn anything new? And if you never learn new and useful things then how will you ever increase your intelligence. So, being able to comprehend and use information as it is presented to you is a sure indicator of intelligence. Intelligence is also shown in a person's rationality and judgement, their decisions and actions.
The way a person chooses to express themselves verbally also reflect the degree to which they are intelligent. Basically, it all comes down to having the capacity for thought and reasoning to a high degree.

They are both a very broadbased word. Intelligence can be strung out for miles in different ways as in book smarts, street smarts, naturally intelligent, like there are people who can be told something once and NEVER forget, then there are people who can read an encyclopedia and understand every word and remember it, then there are people who have unbelievable amount of common sense or street smarts and can out wit any genius in a combat of wittiness toward business deals or con artists etc... clever is just clever, just means you have original ways of creating things or ideas that other people never thought about

I think the important thing here is why you are asking this question?
Do you want to be smarter to impress someone?
Or do you wonder why some people are just way smarter than others.?
Realistically most people just work with what they have and some have only a little others alot (like anything).
And it is obviously possible become more intellegent by studying and using your brain acedemically ETC... but again this is hard work and if your not inclined to be studious and academic then it may be a waste of time to focus alot of effort in an area where you are not inclined to be great if your motivations are not a love of learning ETC....
mY advice if you are trying to impress someone... you will never succeed by faking...
And if you are just wondering why one thing is different from another.........
Well everthing is....
NO two apples are alike.....
Theres no wize answer thats just the way the world is....

it is actually very difficult to determine wheter a person is inteligent or dumb for that matter, it aslo depends in which context you look at it, for instance Einstein was "bumb" in school but he developed probably a few of the most influencial scientifical theories known to man!!! same goes for many teorists who where said to be stupid by their teachers because they couldnt grasp the works they had to learn!!
If you think about it, u cnt realy define stupid and clever. because one person can be very "clever" in maths but very "stupid in biology for arguments sake...
but i think in general people decide wheter you are intelligent or dumb by the way you react to comments, situations, and how you communicate in general!!! and ofcourse intellegince is judged by your occupation and how you did in school or university!!!
i hope i answered your question.. if you disagree plz let me know, would love to know what you think about what i said so email me and let me knw... battiboy_01@yahoo.com
