They dont mean light as in a beam of light, they mean light as in weight. Its possible to have light rain at night, if its not alot of rain. Heavy rain is like a whole bunch of rain. Or rain that comes down really fast and hard.

light rain when its a little windy so bringing the cloudes to cause it rain and so its not much rain very slow and week that can't get u wet that qiuckly

heavey rain is heaveier as it rains more and faster and stronger

the wieght and the amount of rain the comes to the gravitation of our earth. and i think it can rain light at night at the same of heavy, duh.
