Whatever kind of dog fits your personality, needs and lifestyle.
Do some research online of the traits of various dog breeds, to get an idea.
Some of the best companions, if you don't mind a bigger dog and daily walks, are golden labs, and black labs, as they are very trainable, to the point of being nearly 100% reliable to obey on command (keep in mind, you have to train them!!).
Golden retrievers are absolutely delightful, but their reliability to obey when well-trained is about 85% or so, and they tend to wander a bit.
Pointers (english, german shorthaired) have minds of their own, but they love being treated like a person, and are very very lovable. They are also high energy, so be prepared for daily jogs, or trips to the local dog park. They are definitely indoor dogs, they hate being alone.
Of smaller dogs, terrier breeds as a rule are high energy, stubborn, and tend to bark a lot.
Without doubt you can find the perfect doggie match for yourself. Don't forget to go look at shelters! But don't get one at the first trip ... go home an dresearch the breed's the ones you like are first, then go visit again, an dplay with them, to get an idea.

Get one that is easy to care for and intelligent, like a mini schnauzer. I have one and he is a great little friend.
