Having inbound links to your site, from sites that are related and either have a higher or equal ranking than yours. A thing you can do is send a polite email to a related site and ask the "webmaster" if you can exchange links. What I did was post a related link first (after researching the site) sent a email to the webmaster, saying that I would like to exchange links and that I already started the process, etc. After a few weeks, I would visit the other site and if my link wasn't on it, I would remove their link...It was a tedious process but my ranking did improve! Also try to avoid "link farms" search engines and Alexa really frown on link from known "link farms" To further help you out visit the link below
