1. Fill the 3 gallon pour into 5 gallon. Fill the 3 gallon again and pour what you can into the 5 gallon. You will have 1 gallon left. Empty the 5 gallon, and pour the 1 gallon in the 3 gallon into the 5 gallon. Fill the 3 gallon and pour it into the 5 gallon. You now have 4 gallon into the 5 gallon pail.

ask someone "if you took 3 apples from 5 apples, how many apples would you have"? most will subtract, and answer 2.
but, if YOU took the 3 apples then YOU would have 3 apples.
