A mariachi is part of the whole word mariachi band. A mariachi band is a traditional Mexican band, usually consisting of trumpets, violins, a tuba or a smaller guitarron (that's their bass), a guitarist, someone who plays the vihuela (think of it as a 5-stringed guitar) and a vocalist. Their music usually follows a traditional format and is actually quite enjoyabe to listen to. There are even traditional dances that accompany mariachi music, usually with male and female parters. The females wear decorative dresses, and dance alongside the male. It is truly a sight to behold and a great display of traditional culture and entertainment.

A Mariachi is a traditional Mexican musician. He is dressed in a old gentleman cowboy style suit. The term can apply to just one or a group of musicians. They can play acoustic guitars, violins, bass and even horn instruments. They are probably the biggest contribution to the world of music from Mexico.
