The acute accent, é, is written Alt + 130 on the number pad; the grave accent, è, is written Alt + 138, and the circumflex, ê, is written Alt + 136. Take your pick.
The acute accent is used in, e.g. "société" = society.
The grave accent in, e.g. "père" = father
The circumflex in "prêter" = to lend

Click "Start", then cursor over to "All Programs" --> "Accessories" --> "System Tools" --> "Character Map". Click on "Character Map." You'll see the character on the second-to-last row. Click on the character, click "Select", then click "Copy" and close the Character Map. To generate the character, press and hold your Ctrl key and type the letter v.

Another way is to press and hold your Alt key, and (with Num Lock ON) type the corresponding 4-digit number for that character on your numeric pad (it will not work using the numbers from the numbers row). When you select the character in "Character Map," you'll notice in the lower right corner "Keystroke: Alt+0233", which is for the "é" character. So anytime you want to type é, press and hold Alt and type 0233 on your numeric pad (making sure Num Lock is ON). You don't have to load Character Map each time you do this.

Hope this helps.
