Although I dislike the use of the term "grunge," I think that Mudhoney would be considered the quintessential grunge band. They never had as much success as other bands during that time, but they were able to stay together and maintain there distinct sound.

It's gotta be Nirvana, for obvious reasons, but at the time (1993/94) I was an equally massive Alice In Chains fan. They were completely different bands, and I don't really think of them as being the same kind of music. Sure, they were part of the same movement, but the movement was something which wasn't very cohesive and the term "grunge" was coined by the media simply to describe these various and varied bands who were leading a backlash against the superficial, contrived glam metal of the 1980's. Hence why Pearl Jam, a funky, laid back melodic band, were lumped into the same category as Nirvana, a sub-punk heavy alternative band, and Alice In Chains, who basically played nothing more than their own unique brand of metal.

In hindsight, I would say that probably the most overlooked (and hence unlucky) band of the last 25 years were Mudhoney. They were a huge influence on Nirvana. Absolutely fantastic band, but if anything they were slightly too raw and obviously alternative to get any play on MTV or the radio. A shame, because they had some great songs. They still do, and they're still going strong.

Pearl Jam was the only half way decent one. All the others pretty much sound the same like all that other crap that's out there now. Besides, most folks don't realize it but Jimmy Page invented the grunge sound anyway...he just didn't go hog wild with it because he had a million other guitar licks to share with us.
