I live in Germany but I am english and I want to take my driving test as soon as possible. But in Germany you have to be 18, whereas in England you have to be 17. So if I get an english liscense, can I drive legally in Germany at 17?

You can get a learners licence at 17 in Ireland, but it's not legal to drive abroad on, and you can't take your full driving test until you are 18

Yes you can. If you pass your test and you have a valid driving licence in the UK, you CAN drive in Germany legally. In fact, you can drive anywhere in the EU with a valid UK licence.

Please not that this does not mean you can HIRE a car, or DRIVE A HIRE CAR. You may only be able to drive your own vehicle (subject to insurance)

No you will not be able to drive in Germany. You need to respect the law in the country you are living.

Hello,

according to some info (see below), when I got that right (I work in Germany but I'm from Hungary and I'm not an expert from German :D), in certain regions you are allowed to drive, but till your 18th birthday you get a "temporary" license. The site with the lowermost link has a table that summarizes the regions with their prohibitions.

General guidelines for foreigners:

"Official" info in German:

I hope I managed to help... :D

Try getting a European Driving License (which you should be able to get using your UK Driving License). Only problem is if the law says you have to be 18 to drive on a German road, you'd have to wait til you were that age...

I'm afraid not, German law stands on German soil. If the law says 18, regardless of your UK driving licence, you have to be 18.
