I have been raising honey bees since I was a child (http://www.swanfarms.com) and find them one of the most amazing creatures (insects) on earth.

Making honey is just a part of their (the female's) life cycle. When they are first born, they work in the hive, then they become "security guards" and guard the entrance to the hive, and finally the become honey makers.

If for some reason, the hive gets full of honey, the bees will swarm. Half will leave (with the queen) and go find another suitable place to live. The other half will make a new queen and continue on.

Due to the fact that they just keep on making honey, I can get as much as 3 or 4 hundred pounds of honey per year per hive (yummy!!!)
