In some industries they have. Any company that can go overseas and get the same service performed for far less money has made domestic unions obsolete. Union leverage is based on the law of supply and demand just like any other product or service sold. In other industries where domestic labor must be used to provide the service, the unions retain their leverage. The power of unions will be increased if strict laws are enacted governing the practice of using offshore labor to provide services and products needed domestically. If this is not done, the company will simply ignore union demands and go offshore to replace the union workers.

Not at all. Just because membership is down a bit we should encourage unions.

Before the Great Depression America kept wages down by hiring children and making people work 60+ hours a week. Women were left to find their own means of income after losing a mate in a mining accident.

Today we have new laws taking away overtime and benefits. There is too much outsourcing and too much illegal immigration. Our present-day government is only as good as the money it gets from lobbyists. So, hey, we need a worker's lobby, or union, to tell the powers-that-be what we want.

In most respects yes. I go into union and non union companies as part of my job. I would much rather work with non-union people because they can get a job done. union people are the laziest people on earth!

Seriously, it took me 7 hours to do a job at a union company that normally takes 45 minutes at non-union companies.

I think their point systems for taking time off is outdated.

When I was expecting my last daughter I was working for a union company, and I was called into the office to review my absences, (which by the way was only half days for doctor appointments, never full days. ) In the last month of my preganancy they thought to chastise me for having too many points against me for absences.. ???.. Then they looked at my belly, said "When are you due?" to which I replied, "next week"...then they said "Nevermind," sent me back to work . It just didn't make sense on that part, but for most aspects, there are some really good benefits to belonging to the union.

hard artwork unions won't in any respect outlive their relevance to the working guy and the employers. Employers who're unrestrained by using hard artwork companies are continuously abusive to their workers and could under no circumstances supply a truthful cost for the hard artwork they acquire.

Not in the least. What had happened is that they had become abusive. Now the pendulum has swung in the other direction, and they will become necessary again. It's a matter of movement back and forth, much like any other political issue.

no I think we need them to make a big comeback,in Ohio the worker have very little right,the govt.try to really mess the workman comp up bad,the union were only to fight them,said want you what people need protection

in some industries... particularly education.... teachers are already pampered, they do not need unions... trust me I work in a school district admin office and these people are 'spoiled' little brats

yes and no_that may seem strange but when safety issues are involved yes but with everything else i have always negotiated with my employers my terms of engagement and have yet to be dudded in fourty years

no not at all. my hubby's company has no union so they suffer with healthcare, days off, etc.
