It is important to at least be respected by your colleagues if not liked by them. It sounds like you're headed in the right direction if you know half of them. Forgetting names is totally understandable and easily recovered from. A warm smile and a "Great to see you again" goes a long way if you've had to ask for their name again.

I've never been good at remembering names either. But I also know that I should try harder. I compensate (I suppose) by trying to smile at my co-workers, and saying hello or a few words. I think I could recall more names, if I focused more on every time I pass someone I used their name, "Hi Jack" "Hi Jane" and after awhile it would become more natural and my recollection would be automatic.

It is important in the sense that you want your work atmosphere to be enjoyable. Nobody likes going to a place they despise.
I forget manes too, just smile and say HI, don't use their name!
It is aldso important when going for a promotion as management is not going to hire someone that everyone does not like for a supervisory position because it causes them too much grief.

I don't believe its either important, or necessary to be liked by one's colleagues. I'd go for respect before being liked. I'm friendly with everyone, even the catty old hags who don't like me, but I'm here to work, it's not a social club.
I have a few people I'm friendly with, but I don't associate with anyone from work after hours. I also don't go out of my way to piss people off, but I don't go around looking for buddies either.

The REAL question thats on your mind is this --- Do I like myself?
Come to terms with that question and you will realise that liking yourself matters, not being liked by 850 strangers.
At the end of the analysis, you might end up being liked overall...hmmm maybe.

There's no way you would be able to remember all of those names so don't be too hard on yourself. I'm guessing that if you ask this theen it is important to you that your peers like you. It's important to me, but more then just liking me it's important to me that they respect me and the work I do.

I say you aren't there to be liked -- you're there to contribute and make a living. After retirement people usually forget about anyway.
