speed is the distance covered by any moving body,with respect to the time taken by it to do so,however,velocity is the distance travelled by a body in a particular direction,with respect to the time.for example,the expression,"2 km/h"is showing speed,while the expression,"2 km/h towards north"is showing the velocity.
n yeah,speed is scalar,means its having only magnitude,while velocity is vector,as its having magnitude as well as direction.

speed is scalar meaning it is just a number whereas velocity is a vector meaning it is a number and a direction

there's a huge distinction between velocity and velocity in case you think of of here. i'm flying at 100mph right into a 50 mph wind, or i'm flying 100mph with a 50mph tail wind. while i'm flying into the wind my internet velocity is 50 mph. while i'm flying with the wind my internet velocity is a hundred and fifty mph. you may think with regard to the path of velocity to make certain what your internet velocity would be.

speed =rate of change of distance with time
=distance travelled/time taken.
it is a scalar quantity in the sense that the distance travelled could be in any path,straight,curved or zigzag
velocity=rate of change of displacement
=displacement/time.
displacement is the distance of the line segment joining the starting and the end point.
