The most important thing about the Great Wall is that it was a Great Failure.
Begun in the year 208 B.C. by China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, the wall continued to be constructed until the 17th century, making the wall, not only the largest single public works project in history, but also the longest in time to execute (nearly 2000 years).
It's purpose was to keep out a succession of foreigner (Mongols, Turks, Manchurians, etc), but never achieved any of its goals. China was successfully invaded by all of these groups.
Because of its immense size, the wall was impossible to garrison with troops. Thus, long stretches were totally unfortified, and when invading forces approached the wall, they merely constructed ramps and drove their horses across. Over time, however, the greatest damage to the wall was undertaken by the Chinese people themselves. People on both sides of the wall regularly tore down sections of the wall to get at the building materials.
So add it all up; the wall took nearly 2000 years to build, (at a cost of who-knows-how-much people and money). It didn't keep out any of the foreigners it was meant to keep out. So what else can we say? The most important thing about the Great Wall is that it is the Greatest Failure, the Greatest Blunder in the history of the world.

The wall offered a way of communications to the capitol, by technique of how of torches at the same time as an attacked became eminent. in the course of the progression of the wall offered a thanks to do away with prisoners and political dissidents by demanding demanding artwork and virtually guaranteed death from the hard circumstances or chance from attack. To be assigned to do demanding demanding artwork on the wall became virtually a death sentence. The wall became also a highway to effectively bypass somewhat a lot of troops and kit right away for fairly lengthy distances over generally very harsh terrain. The wall effectively deterred invasion for 1400 years, 2 hundred BC to 1271 at the same time as it became finally breached by technique of the Genghis Khan and the Mongols.

THE "most important thing" about The Great Wall? Rather silly question, dontcha think...
That it was conceived and actually built is probably about as close to any measure, as it were, of its 'importance'. What a thing to dream up and waste 5 pts in the asking...

It kept out annoying invaders quite well. It also took a great deal of manpower to build, especially for a monument that extends 1,500 miles!
Unfortunately, it is also known as the world's biggest and longest gravesite because many men have perished trying to build it and their bodies and bones were built in the wall.

it kept out the mongols. Only a third of the wall stands today as the locals take bits out to build/repair their homes.
