1. Warning of or having dreadful or terrible consequences; calamitous: a dire economic forecast; dire threats.
2. Urgent; desperate: in dire need; dire poverty.

Common usage in my experience is often to mean 'really bad'

Dire means extreme.
As in -
Dire need ... needing help/assistance/whatever... very urgently.
Dire consequences ... there will be hell to pay for your deeds!!
Dire straights ... in a very bad situation and needing urgent aid.
And that, in a nutshell, practically sums it up!
