Mixed reactions, to put it mildly.

Some of the older countries who had been through World War II were understandably skeptical, which you can't blame them for. Why, some of the old veterans who had fought in that war committed suicide!

Re-unification overall, though, let's face it, helped relations immensely, opening the gate to Eastern Europe and setting up what is now the greater EU, with improved trade relations, a common currency and the like. Overall, despite grumblings, I think it has worked very well, particularly with countries like Poland, Romania, Hungary, Russia, and may others.

Ironically, it hasn't been quite as good within the re-unified Germany: foreign investment is down, particularly in the depressed east region, despite billions of tax euros, th east is still not up to par with the western part, attendance in the universities is sagging, and the population is in general as well. Things have been better recently, but a standard of living enjoyed by the western part of the country before re-unification is probably wishful thinking.
