I'm gonna disagree with everyone and say that a month would be too long. If I was the South African president for only one day, I would give the presidency over to you, ndemo.

Why? You seem to be a bright guy! And someone who could fix things.

Hmm, good question. I would immediately make a speech about the threat of HIV/AIDS in South Africa, and call foreign governments and NGOs to get as much ARV drugs into the country, and start a massive educational campaign so that everyone is informed. I would also begin the process of hiring as many qualified staffers that can deal with HIV/AIDS to work in the government and at to train others that work in hospitals and orphanages across the country. I volunteered at a Babies' Home where some of the babies had AIDS, and there is such a need in this area for the government to do something as soon as they can. I also read in Jim Wooten's "We Are All The Same" about Nkosi Johnson, what Mbeki's reaction has been to the AIDS crisis. Or rather, his non-reaction. Something must be done, because until AIDS is reacted to, and mechanisms put in place to stop the exponential spread, AIDS is going to continue to kill off the best of the economy, and put more of a strain on it by creating thousands of orphans. So something must be done, and my month would be focused on that issue.

Oh, and I'd try to wield some international power and get rid of Mugabe, and incorporate the HIV/AIDS Programs into Zimbabwe because their problem is exponentially larger than South Africas.

Basil P has mostly got it right excepting that there are no competent replacements that are of the correct hue. The issues facing the Country i.e crime,corruption,HIV/AIDS,poverty,racial strife etc seem insurmountable. Since the Country is lapsing into a state of being ungovernable and the Presidency is only for one month the astute thing to do would be to get as much money into a Swiss Banking account as quickly as possible before it completely implodes but I am sure Mbeki has already done that.

I would change the laws because our main problem in South Africa is crime! This is what i would do:

If you steal/rob/hijack - Your finger gets cut off for every time you commit that crime and if you run out of fingers then it goes to your toes and then to your arms etc etc.

If you shoot somebody for no reason - You get shot too in the exact same place.

If you rape a female/male - Your penis will be cut off.

If you murder somebody - You die the same way as they did!

If you threaten somebody - You get a restriction order against you and if you break the restriction order you go to jail!

In jail there will be hardly any food, no smoking, no talking, no beds etc etc!

If you are in jail for more than 5 times you go to jail for the rest of your life!

But remember you are innocent until found guilty. Therefore we need clever, good, honest and the BEST detectives, police, judges etc.

Too bad its only for a month though!

A month is inadequate, however ;
1. Fire the entire cabinet and re-elect ministers who are appropriately qualified.
2. Beef up safety & security
a.pay the police decent salaries ( to avert corruption)
b.Bring back the death penalty for serious crime viz. Rape / Murder / Paedophile
c. Life sentences for "white collar" crime
3.a. Revamp & modernise all public health facilities.
b. Compulsory service at hospitals for all medical specialists. ( 1 x 12 hrs per wk)
c. Pay Nursing and allied staff decent wage/salaries - on par with other Western Institutions.
d. FREE healthcare for ALL.
4. Strenghten the Education system
a. revist the curriculum at schools
b. free education - up to Graduate level

5. Cap all Ministers salaries & benefits

Re-instating the Death Penalty will be a good idea but I wouldn't do it for one reason, it will bring up a lot of controversy, uproar, unrest and havoc in the country. I would re-educate the whole South African community on basic and technical skills so that people go out and look for jobs instead of committing crime.

Allow mass immigration of Brits, give em jobs and cheap housing and lots of free sunscreen!

Hey okay I'm a Brit so I'm bias, but take it as a compliment, South Africa is amazing.

Dump the rimminals that call themselves politicians(the entire cabinet) and install harsh laws for all crime. Bring back the death penalty and get rid of murderers, rapists, child abusers and corrupt politicians. Kick Jacob Zumas *** for being a brain dead idiot, tar and feather Thabo Mbeki for folloing the rantings of unqualified fools and kick all illegal immagrants out!!

You can't really do much in a month, can you? I'd start by running a poll much like this one. You're not about to become president for a month, are you?
