It depends on the sport. Most of the Olympic sports have a qualifying process, trials or other competition while others are selected based upon their recent performances.

These trials are NOT open competitions. To be invited to these events, you must be an active competitior with some kind of status in the event such as a national ranking, listed performance (such as a race time) in a recognized competition.

Depending on the sport, 2 or 3 athletes are selected or win a place on the team.

For more information, check with the governing body that organizes the sport in the US. For example, Track is run by USA Track & Field.

Each country sends a delegation to the Olympic Games. Each country has selections processes that differ. In the US, Olympic Trials are held anywhere from 2 years to 2 months before the Games. Qualifying times or standards must be met in order to participate in Trials. Winners are then selected, often in a head-to-head competitive format, and are named to the US Team. Other sports choose athletes for tryouts, and those athletes then attend one or more camps where they are judged and deemed worthy or not of the Olympic Team honor. For many athletes, even qualifying for Olympic Trials may be the pinnacle of an athletic career. It would be best to check with a particular sports organizing body, (such as The Athletics Congress for track and field, US Swimming, US Ski and Snowboard Federation, or similar organizations) for the particular requirements for each sport.

You don't just show up and try out. Whatever sport you are thinking about would have a nationally sanctioned body that will have standards and qualifying criteria you must achieve. Each Country is allowed 3 athletes per event but The Olympics also have a certain time/level you must achieve even if you win the National Championship of that sport.
