I think if head shots are in black and white they draw more emphasis to the face
It somehow just gives it so much more character

They can be in color too. For a long time everyone did black and white because it was much cheaper to reproduce in b&w. Not so anymore.

I prefer b & w, myself. It takes a lot more retouching to make a color headshot good, and there's something striking about black and white that I like more - not just in headshots, but in general. And there's something sort of traditional about it and that appeals to me, in the same way that saying break a leg appeals to me.

I'm kind of old-school about this...back in the day, an actor carried around a black-and-white 8x10 as a calling card, and that's all there was to it. I still like the look of B/W quite a lot, but...

Times have changed. I just had new headshots done for myself, and I went with color. Ultimately, you have to make certain concessions to the market, and, if this is what agents/producers/directors/casting agents are more comfortable with RIGHT NOW...better go with the flow.

Theatre: Headshots should be in black & white. Because of lighting, natural skintone gets bleached out on stage. Color is unimportant.

Film: Color for sure

They can be in color - it's just in theatre playbills they will print black and white. So a black and white one for that reason is easier for printing. I prefer color though, because then you really see the shade of the person's hair, the true color of their eyes, the different shades and marks on the peron's face.
Either work as long as they are a good shot!

The trend is color. If they're B&W, does that mean that you're out of touch, or not serious, or don't look like the photo? Not necessarily valid questions, but why invite them being asked at all.

i don't think so because then no one can tell what color your hair and eyes really are
