The history of New Zealand dates back at least 700 years to when it was discovered and settled by Polynesians. Europeans visited the country in 1642 but it wasn't until the 1840s onward that it experienced large scale European migrations.

read michael kings oxford history of new zealand, it says what all these people (except the one who said new zealand sucks) have said but better and more informed. no-one has been able to finally agree on when maori came to new zealand, the remnants of a polynesian rat was found dated 2000 thousand years before the polynesian were supposed to have arrived in new zealand, new zealand has only one native mammal and that is the bat.
the maori wars were in response to the crown(ie, the british settlers under queen vics authority) acquiring land. the crown legally bought some land, made laws to confiscate other land, used their own laws to take the land without payment(before selling it to the settlers) at some point the maori got upset about their land being not illegally, because the crown would make laws to validate their confiscation and rebelled, leading to the new zealand land wars(which used to be known as the maori wars, or the maori land wars). the maoris werent to bad at putting up a fight against professional soldiers since they were generally farmers.
the maori culture is stagnant, it is only starting to change, a brief description would be that they are tribal, like to sing, communal take their shoes off at the door, dont sit on tables or pillows, still have meeting houses decorated appropiately. go to the marae for a hui and you'll see what i mean. nowadays the culture leans towards an american african culture. too much mtv i think.
the maori tribes in the central north island also have a queen, the tainui tribes had a king-movement to establish a maori dignantry, i guess, to be a figurehead for the maori people, this didnt quite work as maoris are not of one single tribe and different areas did not support the idea. it is one reason why certain tribes did not participate in world war one because it was the cause of the english king not the maori king
hope this was useful

new zealand wars are a better way of describing it.
in 1835 maori chief from around the country signed the decleration of independence saying new zealand was a formal nation (you know know more about nz history than 95% of new zealanders - congradulations). In 1840, the treaty of waitangi was signed, saying that the maori cede control of the country over to england (except it only said that in the english version - the maori version was more vague, and outlined more of a joint partnership of control - maori over maori people, english over english)
The english started to take control of the country, and the 'maori wars' were fought between maori tribes who did not follow the governors rules. These wars were not really wars in the traditional since as the maori built 'pa' or forts they defended. Theses pa were revolutionary as the british could never destory the pa or kill anyone inside them. This was the same british army that conquered the world.
The wars ended in stalemate as the culture was changing, the existing maori society moulded into mainstream of european society.
Queen is Queen Elizabeth, you can google her, social system is pretty easy too. I gave you the hard part.
