the standard of programmes was good, (M.H.O)
Does anyone think that the advent of freeview has downgraded everything?

It's not that I don't like it, onename. Read the question!
Has it downgraded the quality of what is being churned out?

It isn't the advent of Freeview that is to blame, it was the advent of first satellite, then cable & digital TV that created a larger amount of channels and this could be accused of bringing down the standard of TV as there is too much air-time to fill, so it gets filled with rubbish. However, I think there is still a huge amount of really great telly out there, you just have further to look.

"Freeview" is a really great thing, as it gives people the opportunity to have some of the range of channels out there without paying the exorbitant charges that you get with the contracts for satellite/cable/digital.

Just wanted to clear that up.

We tend to be a bit too nostalgic about old telly. Anyone who thinks it used to be much better has obviously forgotten or never seen The Golden Shot, Val Doonican, The Black & White Minstrels, 3-2-1, Billy Cotton etc. etc.

The trouble is that even in the old days they had trouble filling TV with anything but dross. Now the quality stuff is spread more thinly and the dross is drossier in order to chase ever diminishing ratings. The saving grace on Freeview is BBC4 which is like BBC2 used to be before dumbing down with so many crappy makeover shows.

3? Do you mean 4?

I hardly watch BBC1 and ITV (in fact I never watch ITV). I'd mostly watch Channel 4 and sometimes BBC2. E4 (endless Friends repeats not withstanding) is pretty good and More4 shows a bunch of shows I like. Skythree is also pretty good as it's starting to show more shows that have been on sky1 (which I don't have)
and I like ABC1 although I wish they didn't end it at 6 and the constant repeats are irritating.

Yep. I think there are some nights when you flick through every single channel and there is absolutely nothing to watch but rubbish and re-runs.
