The books cover a timeline from 1880, a bit late for true Wild West
"President Thomas Jefferson was the driving force that launched the Lewis and Clark expedition partly because he wanted to map and investigate the lands to the west and firm up claims of the United States to disputed territory in the Pacific Northwest"... this was commenced in May 1804, and is the period of the great expoits that the Wild West period refers to.
Only with artistic licence could anyone place Sherlock Holmes in that setting. Doyle never did I beleive in any of the 60 tales told

The only book I can think of, was actually a short story (well, short-ish), and was called A Study In Scarlet.
The first half was set in London, and dealt with the discovery of a murder, in present times, or at least present in the context of the book.
The second half though, was a flashback, set in the US (not sure where) and was about a Mormon community (and the events leading up to the murder).
I know this is not a western at all, but it is the only story that I can think of that even comes close.
