There are placental, marsupial, and what other category of mammal? The platypus is one, and there is another animal--but we can't think of it right now. Does anyone know which other animal besides the platypus belongs in that category--and can you name that category? We can't remember either of those answers.

The platypus is one of the two animals in the order Monotremata. (Platypus and echidnas) It is the only member of the mammal family Ornithorhynchidae. Platypus is from the Greek platys meaning broad and pous meaning foot, referring to the animal's webbed foot.

The Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is a 30–40 cm long, semi-aquatic mammal endemic to eastern Australia, and one of the five extant species of monotremes, the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young (the other four are echidnas). It is the sole extant representative of its family (Ornithorhynchidae) and genus (Ornithorhynchus), though a number of fossilised relatives have been found, some of them also in the Ornithorhynchus genus.
