It is a subgenre of hardcore punk music and the "emo" stands for "emotional" and started out being called "emocore", short for "emotional hardcore". The songs have emotional outburts (like near screaming) but is becoming more refined and mainstrain. A good example of a good emo band is Hawthorne Heights.
