We can take this question in two different ways:
1) Why is the particular person who currently occupies the position of Pope a Catholic?
2) Why is it that the Pope – whoever that may be – is Catholic?
The answer to the first question is likely to be complex – some alchemical mixture of upbringing, inclination, and arcane spiritual urgings. The second question is much more easily answered: the Pope is Catholic because if he weren't Catholic, he would never have been elected Pope.

It is actually one of the requirements to be Pope,
Any baptized male Catholic can be elected Pope. Although the chances of a non-cardinal being elected if very small.
If the person elected is not yet a bishop, then he is ordained a bishop before accepting the office of the Papacy.
Theoretically we could once again have a married pope before we have married priests.
With love in Christ.

Pope is the name given to the leader of the Catholic church, just as Caesar was the name given to the leader of Rome.

He'd be booted out if he wasn't. And the Catholic church was the original one, I guess, with all others e.g. Protestant, Eastern Orthodox etc. being offshoots where people decided they weren't going to be dictated to by Rome.
Does the Pope sh*t in the woods?

What an excellent thought. Perhaps the papacy should change every 4 years, a new Pope from a different religion, next time we could have a Rabbi and then a Muslim cleric etc etc,

The pope is probably a Catholic because, like me, he was born into a Catholic family. His mother was probably very religious, like mine. He was probably taken into church every sunday, like me. And he probably embraces the gift of peace which prayer brings you, like me.
I'm a very lucky girl!

Early church took its name from the cathars... Emperor Constantine converted all of the "known" world to christianity and literaly wrote the bible, or at least edited it. Pope or papal from the early word for father... papa etc

Apparently he deserves it. No one, but a catholic, could be convinced to dress in that ridiculous outfit, for the praise of God.
