Do you mean student portfolios? I have my students develop several portfolios during the course of the year. It is essentially a collection of work and writing. They also keep a writing portfolio throughout the year. The main purpose in my class is for reflection. For example, at the middle and end of the school year, the student reviews his/her writing and writes a reflection. At the end of the year, I also ask the students to go back and rewrite a previous piece, using what they know now (Track Changes in Word is nice for this).

I am assuming that since you posted this under teaching then you are talking about a teacher candidate's portfolio. If so, then a portfolio is a collection of papers that you have done or achieved while you were in school. In my portfolio we were told to include our Educational philosophy, reflective journals, field experiences, research papers, lesson plans, assessments, code of ethics, and resources. Keep in mind that I am only a junior so I will probably have to add more my senior year. Check with your schools education department to see what you will need to include.

A portfolio is generally a collection of materials that represents a body of work. If looking for work, it would include a broad expression of you CV, Skills, Academic transcript & any awards that you have received.
In finance, a portfolio is a collection of investments held by an institution or a private individual

It is generally a collection of your best work... it could be reports, letters, or artwork. Portfolios may be requested for interviews, especially in the advertising, journalism, or photography fields.
