A mate of mine has moved into a new home and so are there ways of removing this smell from carpets and furniture at all, or ways of covering it up? Any ideas? Thanks very much x

Try a product called Nature's Miracle. They have it at Petco and Petsmart.

Possibly an odour neutraliser as others have suggested - but I think it is virtually impossible to shift if it is really ingrained - can you friend afford to replace all the carpets and furniture? That would be the best way. Also, if you manage to get rid of the smell you will always know that the carpets and furniture had cat pee on them - yuck!

Yeah, there are tons of products at your local store just for that. It's the urea in the pee that makes it smell. Most any product for dog or cat urine should work. Look around the carpet cleaner section of the store. One thing I recommend, try the cleaner in and out of the way spot first that no one will really see to make sure that it doesn't discolor the carpet before using it.

The best thing to get out a bad odor is vinegar. I know that sounds stupid but vinegar neutralizes bad smells in the air. Just put some in a container. Then set the container in the pee smelled room. Wait and ta da no more pee smell. Not sure how long it takes the vinegar smell away but probably as soon as you dump it out. Makes sense to me good luck cat piss is the worse.

White vinegar will work but you have to drench the peed-on area of the carpet with it. Soak up as much of the cat urine as you can, then pour vinegar on the spot and allow to soak through. Let dry naturally. Your rug is going to smell like a salad for a few hours, but once the vinegar evaporates the urine odor will be gone.

Im afraid not...

The best thing to do is get rid of the carpet.

That "frebreeze" only works until it dries, then its cat pee again smell...

You can scrub your carpets, and when they get wet again, it will come back...

If its in the wood, under that carpet, then sand it down, and put some polyeurathane or spar varnish on it to seal the wood, and the remaining smell.

I know, my family had cats that "peed" in back of the couch and it drove them nuts...They didnt know about litter boxes and figured the cat would go outside to do its business...sheesh!

I wish you well..

i don't think anything gets rid of the smell, my cat has pee'd on my sofa, i have cleaned and scrubbed the whole sofa, even washed the foam inserts in the bath, removed all the inside and cleaned, used neutradol, fabreeze, and guess what it made bugger all difference.

the only way to get rid of the smell is to get rid of the carpet and furniture that has been 'infected'

You can probably find products for this purpose at pet stores or pet departments in places like WalMart or, for carpet stains, you could try using a solution of half rubbing alcohol and half water in a spray bottle. which seems to work well. Just spray on the stain and rub it in.

My cat once peed inside my leather art portfolio (luckily it was empty at the time) and no ammount of washing seemed to shift that smell. But over the years the smell faded and it now smells of leather once more.

A product called 'Day drops' - it gets rid of absolutely every smell and you only need a tiny bit. You can get it from the chemist - apparently its what folk use in colostomy bags, but it works!
