Windows XP has the best "Plug & Play" capabilities.
All I've had to do with any of my printers is plug them in, and rarely have to use an install disc, because XP has most of the current drivers, although I do use the install disc, because I trust the info on the disc more than I do Microsoft.
I'm using a Brother MFC3220C all in one for important printing & an old Apple Laser Writer Select for my eBay invoices.
My computer is custom built by me, Abit KV7 motherboard, AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Barton core, nVidia FX5500 video card, 1 Maxtor 7,000rpm 100gig hd, 2 Maxtor 7,000rpm 200gig hd's, HP Lightscribe DVD/CD burner running XP Pro SP2.
I've never had any problems installing a printer.

If your printer is a bit old and does not have a cd driver with it, xp normally has a list of drivers for various forms of printers. Just browse thru the list of drivers it has installed then go for the nearest one. If it still doesn't have it or it requires you to go on line, the websites of the printers like hp, canon, epson - have ready to download drivers you can download to install your printer. Go to the folder of printers and faxes in the control panel and try it.
