I agree that Stairway and money aren't anywhere near the best songs by Zepplin and Floyd. But...as for newer bands not being as good I really think it's down to personal opinion. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are set to be equally if not bigger than these bands in question and have already had a 26 year career (so I'd actually say they are exempt from being classed as a new band).

There have been other bands that have made a mark on music far greater than Zep and Floyd too! Take Nirvana! who if it wasn't for a small mistake with a shotgun may have been one of the greatest acts of all time.

It also seems to me, that if Yahoo! answers was around 30 years ago there may be someone asking the same question in reference to Floyd and Zep being "new" bands and why? aren't they ever going to be as good as the Beatles and Elvis or even Cliff Richard! (he was a massive star once and I bet some people thought he 'd always be)

I know what you mean. I feel like modern music is so orchestrated. Listen to coldplay or other newer rock songs and and the stops and rhythms seems so formulated. Back in Zeps day, Jimmy Pages guitarwork was so unformulated and almost random. At the same time it was wonderfully refined and inspired. Same goes for Hendrix and the like. I can stand "formulated" music though. There are plenty of pop songs that I've enjoyed, but I dont think you'll ever see great music as in the 60's, 70's, and 80's anymore.

Not while there's breath in any of the Zeppelins, the Stones, Aerosmith or Carlos Santana's body. But they are growing old and dying out fast. When the last refrain ripples out of Santana's guitar, there will be a terrible silence of something gone forever, broken only by the distant heavenly weeping of Hendrix. And then the world will belong to Simon Cowell and the soulless, spiritless pop-munchkins he spews into the world, like Satan's little helper lowering the standards for future generations.

Slip on your headphones and turn them up all the way. Soon, deafness will be a blessing.

No..they just take time to mature and develop. Floyd were around for 6 or 7 years before they were recognised as 'great' internationally. Dark side helped them break the US market and everything expanded form then on. I think the shelf life for bands today is so short that there career's are prematurely ended...without fulfilling their initial potential. Band's in 60's and 70's tended to stick together..like a family or marriage..despite difficulties or pressures..and as a consequence..their music develop and evolved..with far more depth and character. Let's see in 20years or so.. if we talk about U2, Red Hot Chilli's or Green Day as being great!!. I bet we'd be surprised.

I have to agree. Most of the music on my mp3 is at least ten years old, and I count New Order and Depeche Mode among my favourite bands. This is mainly cause I'm sick of bands who can't play instruments, or do endless cover versions to disguise the fact they can't find good songwriters.
One of the big problems is that bands now are at the mercy of record companies- can you imagine a band such as Depeche Mode being told what to do by their record company?!
I have a good argument- if people are still listening to music 20 and thirty years after release, it must be in some way good.

the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Zutons, Razorlight, Kooks, Bloc Party, Aerosmith, The White Stripes, The Hives ... to mention a few are great musicians.

Stairway to Heaven and Money are actually weak examples of Led Zepplin & Pink Floyds work.

Coldplay holds their own. I like Avril and Kelly. The Dixie Chicks can play. The White Stripes are good.
Give young musicians a chance.
