Grace O’Mally
Often referred to as the 'pirate queen,' Grace O’Mally was born in 1530 in Connaught, a small village on the west coast of Ireland. Her father was a chieftain in a clan that ruled the area and possessed several castles and a fleet of ships. Though her early life was common, in that she was married in 1546 and in the following years she bore three children, when her husband died she left his clan and returned to her own to take command over the fleet. The fleet that she took command of was considerable, consisting of several small ships and at least one galleon, one of the very few of such ships in Ireland.
She took up raiding other clans by sea and attacking passing merchant ships. The British soon took notice and made a sortie to destroy her force. However, Grace led her fleet in defensive battles and eventually forced the English to retreat. The attack by the British did, however, rouse her ire, and in the subsequent years she focused her activities on harassing English interests at sea. Following a term of imprisonment by the English, Grace reconciled with them and promised to defend England.
Grace’s son eventually took command of her fleet and fulfilled his mother’s promise to defend England from its enemies. He was as talented as his mother had been at leading a fleet, and was made Viscount Mayo in 1627. This was, unfortunately, after Grace had died, in 1603.

Pirate and Privateer. (She had a dispensation from Queen Elizabeth to pillage the French and Spanish with impunity as long as she left English ships alone)
One story claims that she was on shore getting some repairs done. She went to a castle in the area and claimed the traditional right of hospitality ( a free meal and a warm bed offered to all travelling strangers) The lord was already eating and the porter refused her entry so she left. On the way back to the boat she met the son of the lord and took him prisoner until a ransom was paid and from that day on the castle has never locked it's doors.
